Julius Berger Helps Equip Communities in Yenagoa to Fight Against Malaria
On October 28, 2014, members from Julius Berger’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) team visited 900 pregnant women and nursing mothers at the Amarata Health Clinic and the Yenizue-Gene Health Centre in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
The Julius Berger CSR team gave each woman a World Health Organization certified long-lasting insecticide treated mosquito bed net (LLINs). To help communities sustain the use of these nets and to increase the likelihood of long-term malaria prevention, Julius Berger also gives recipients a detailed and illustrated information pamphlet explaining both how to care for the net and other important tips on malaria prevention.
According to the National Malaria Elimination Program (NMEP), because of the ongoing prevalence of malaria in the country, Nigeria has a 25% childhood mortality rate and an 11% maternal mortality rate. Julius Berger is an active stakeholder in Nigeria’s ongoing fight against malaria, and is committed to helping decrease the nation’s mortality rates. LLIN’s are a very effective means to prevent malaria infection because they create a protective barrier against mosquitoes at night, when the vast majority of transmissions occur.
Since the start of Julius Berger’s Malaria Prevention Campaign, over 10,000 nets have been distributed. As a committed corporate citizen, Julius Berger believes in serving the health and educational needs of its host communities.
