Board of Directors

Our highly experienced Board of Directors provide strong stewardship.

Comprised of twelve members, ten Non-Executive Directors, three of who are Independent Directors, and two Executive Directors, Julius Berger’s Board of Directors reflects professionals from various industry, providing a diversity of experience and expertise. Board Members work to ensure the Group's long-term sustainable value and positive contributions towards all stakeholders within an appropriate framework of governance, accounting, finance and further effective controls and policies, while protecting the rights and interests of the Group’s shareholders and to ensure the Group’s affairs are properly managed.


The Board is collectively responsible and accountable for:

  • Strategic direction and policies that take business risks, resources and opportunities into account
  • Appropriate systems and processes, and reporting thereon
  • The framework for risk assessment and management
  • The proper and proactive management of company resources to achieve corporate and business goals and objectives
  • The financing needs of the Group
  • Financial control, use of financial resources, acquisitions and divestures and the monitoring and reporting thereon
  • Governance structures, policies and procedures
  • Value creation and alignment of Stakeholder relationships
Mutiu Sunmonu
Chairman of the Board

Mr. Mutiu Sunmonu is a graduate of the University of Lagos, Lagos State. He holds a Bachelor of Science (First Class Honours) in Mathematics & Computer Sciences. He had worked in various positions in the Shell Petroleum Development Company, where he rose to the position of Managing Director, and subsequently Country Chairman, Shell Companies in Nigeria, positions he held till February 28, 2015. He was also conferred with the National Honour of the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON). He is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Julius Berger Investments Limited, SanLeon Energy (UK) Plc, Alpha Mead Group and Coronation Insurance Plc. George Marks
Vice Chairman

Mr. George Marks is a German national and holds the equivalent of a Bachelors of Business Administration Degree from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mannheim, Germany as well as an Honorary Doctorate of Science Degree in Engineering from the Lagos State University, Lagos State. He is a Member of the Association of National Accountant of Nigeria. He joined Bilfinger Berger SE in the year 1976 and has worked on a broad range of projects both nationally and internationally. He was seconded to work with Julius Berger Nigeria Plc in December 1988 where he handled a broad and varied range of responsibilities. He was Financial Director from December 1, 1993 to July 7, 2001, Managing Director from July 8, 2001 to October 15, 2007, and acting Managing Director from December 10, 2015 to July 23, 2016. He was Managing Director, Bilfinger Berger Nigeria GmbH and Julius Berger International GmbH, both in Wiesbaden, Germany from the year 2007 to October 1, 2018. Engr. Dr. Lars Richter
Managing Director

Engr. Dr. Lars Richter is a German national and holds the equivalent of a Doctorate degree in Civil Engineering from the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany. He is a Member of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (“COREN”). He joined Bilfinger Berger AG in the year 2002 and was seconded to work with Julius Berger Nigeria Plc in November 2009. He has worked on a broad range of notable projects both nationally and internationally. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Quality Surveyors (FNIQS). Christian Hausemann
Executive Director, Finance

Christian Hausemann is a German national and holds a qualification as an Industrial Business Manager (CCI) from the SLS Business School, Erfurt, Germany. He is a Member of the Association of National Accountant of Nigeria He joined Bilfinger Berger in the year 1994 as Commercial Project Manager and thereafter held various positions in Australia and Nigeria culminating in his appointment as the Chief Financial Officer of Julius Berger International GmbH in October 2018. He is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Julius Berger Medical Services Limited and Member of the Board of Directors of Julius Berger FZE. Engr. Jafaru Damulak
Non-Executive Director

Engr. Jafaru Damulak is a graduate of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering. He is a Member, Nigeria Society of Engineers and Member, The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (“COREN”). He joined Julius Berger Nigeria Plc in the year 1988 and worked in various capacities within the Company before his disengagement for public service in 1999. He was a member of the House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007. He is the Chairman of the Boards of Directors of PrimeTech Design and Engineering Nigeria Limited and Julius Berger Free Zone Enterprise as well as the Managing Director of Elm Properties and Estate Development Company Limited. Dr. Ernest Nnaemeka Azudialu
Non-Executive Director

Dr. Ernest Nnaemeka Azudialu-Obiejesi, OFR holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accountancy from the University of Benin, a Masters of Business Administration, as well as an Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka Anambra State. He is also a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Sales Management. He was conferred with the National Honour of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR).   He founded the Obijackson Business Conglomerate, which consists of 12 (twelve) companies with significant operating interests in the Oil & Gas Industry. Gladys Olubusola Talabi

Mrs. Gladys Olubusola Talabi is a Legal Practitioner. She is a graduate of the University of Lagos, Lagos State and holds a Masters of Law Degree from the same University. She was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1978. She also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Banking and Finance from the Financial Institution Training Center (FITC) Lagos. She is a Member of the Shareholder Advisory Council of Julius Berger International GmbH, and the Board of Directors of Julius Berger Investments Limited. Mrs. Belinda Ajoke Disu is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts and Northeastern University in Boston, USA. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from the University of Massachusetts and a Masters of Science in Leadership from the Northeastern University also in Boston, Massachusetts USA. She is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Management of Nigeria (MNIM) and the Institute of Directors of Nigeria (MIOD). Engr. Goni Musa Sheikh
Non-Executive Director

Engr. Goni Musa Sheikh is a graduate of the University of Exeter, Camborne School of Mines, England. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Minerals Engineering and a Master of Science Degree from the Imperial College, University of London, in Minerals Process Design Engineering. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Mining Engineers, Member, Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE); Member, The Council of Registered Engineers of Nigeria (COREN); Member, Council of Mining Engineers and Geoscientists and Member, Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society, and an Associate of the Camborne School of Mines. He has over 35 years of cognate, international and strategic experience in Mining, Oil and Gas operations, particularly in the public sector, which commenced with the Nigerian Mining Corporation, Jos, and from which sector he retired as Federal Permanent Secretary in July 2015. Ernest Chukwudi Ebi
Independent Non-Executive Director

Mr. Ernest Chukwudi Ebi, MFR, FCIB, FIOD is a graduate of the Howard University, Washington DC, USA. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (“BBA”) in Marketing and a Masters of Business Administration (“MBA”). He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (FCIB) and the Institute of Directors of Nigeria (FIOD). He has had a very distinguished career within the financial services industry serving in various leadership positions, culminating in his appointment as a Deputy Governor at the Central Bank of Nigeria from June 1999 to June 2009. He was also conferred with the National Honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (“MFR”). Amb. Adamu Saidu Daura
Independent Non-Executive Director

Ambassador Adamu Saidu Daura, MFR, attended the University of Jos, Nigeria, where he obtained an Advanced Diploma in Public Administration; He was a Member of the House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from 1999 to 2003 where he served on various House Committees. He has had a very distinguished career in the Diplomatic service where he served as Ambassador to various countries, including the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Republic of Pakistan. He was also conferred with the National Honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR). He had served on the boards of State and Federal parastatal. Chidi Anya
Independent Non-Executive Director

Mr. Chidi Anya, Esq. is a graduate of the University of Nigeria and holds a Master’s in International Law and Diplomacy (MILD) from the University of Lagos. He has also attended various executive management courses at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, Illinois. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1989 and is recognized as a Notary Public. He is the founding Partner of The Channings Law Firm. He had previously served on the Board of FBN Holdings Plc.
