Iconic office complex development in Abuja
Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission
Located in the Central Business District of Abuja, the NUPRC’s new Head Office complex is designed and being built by Julius Berger. It includes a 48,400m² main building, a security/control house, an energy centre/technical building, together with a 6-level car park.
Dubbed “The Barrel”, the building’s iconic barrel-shaped outer shell design reflects the commission’s core business and serves to protect the main façade from direct sun based on an analysis of the sun-path-diagram. Destined to become one of Abuja’s landmark buildings, its ageless design is an icon of innovation and ingenuity.
The shell consists of an in-situ reinforced concrete structure based on flat strip foundations and a base plate, reinforced concrete walls and columns as well as flat slabs. Upon completion, it will have a glazed façade consisting of a curtain wall with powder-coated aluminium frames and double-glazed infill panels. This façade will be partially equipped with windows that can be opened, while the rest of the reinforced concrete structure will be clad with ventilated limestone cladding.
The building’s central open cavity design and overall height require it to have extensive fire protection measures such as fire-resistant materials and fire-extinguishing systems to safeguard its users. Its complex room geometries, namely, the Auditorium/Theatre, the Library, the Seminar Rooms, the Conference Room and the Committee Room require special acoustic materials such as carpeting, perforated metal wall cladding and acoustic ceilings.
The building will comply with the highest international standards and is equipped with all state-of-the-art systems.
